Total knee replacements can be a good option for many men and women, but they’re not for everyone. If you have been experiencing unbearable knee pain, have had a prior knee surgery, or have injured ligaments, or joint damage – you may need a complete knee replacement.
The image above shows two different kinds of polyethylene bearings used in total knee replacement surgeries. The polyethylene having a tall and wide tibial post provides some degree of medial lateral and rotational constraint. The surgeon makes the choice to use constrained or non-constrained inserts depending upon the patient’s anatomy.
The image above shows the usual implants used in a posterior stabilized total knee replacement. The femoral and the tibial components are usually cemented on the bone.
A cruciate-retaining total knee replacement utilizes an intact posterior cruciate ligament for providing femoral roll-back. The nerves present in the posterior cruciate ligament may also make the artificial joint feel more natural.
Revision knee replacement surgery may utilize modular components with stems and bone augments. The addition of tibial and femoral stems provides additional stability and decreases the wear and tear of the polyethylene insert.
